How to Pass a Prop Firm Challenge in 10 Trading Days
Most traders fail prop firm challenges for one reason: they try to hit the profit target in as few trades as possible. The math says the opposite approach works. Small size, tight risk, repeat for ~10 days. Here's the framework that actually gets people funded.
The math: profit target × account ÷ risk per trade
Take a $50K Standard challenge at StellarX. Profit target: 8% = $4,000. Max daily loss: 3% = $1,500. Max drawdown: $2,500.
If you risk 1R = $250 per trade (0.5% of account), you need 16R of net profit to pass. That's achievable in 10-15 trading days with a 50% win rate at 2:1 reward:risk.
| Day | Trades | R | Cumulative |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 3 | +2R | +2R ($500) |
| 2 | 2 | -1R | +1R |
| 3 | 3 | +3R | +4R |
| ... | ... | ... | ... |
| 10 | ~25 total | +16R | ✓ Target hit |
The daily rules that prevent blow-ups
- Stop at -2R on the day. If you lose two trades, close the platform. Tomorrow is a new day. You're protecting against the daily loss limit but also against the psychological spiral that ends in breached accounts.
- Size down the day after a losing day. Risk 0.5R instead of 1R until you're back to break-even for the week.
- Hard-code your TP and SL before you click buy. At StellarX the default bracket toggle is on for a reason. Manual exits kill win rate.
- No revenge trades. If you miss an entry, let it go. The next setup is 20 minutes away.
Instrument selection matters more than entries
Trade one instrument during the challenge. NQ or ES. Not both. Not crypto on top. You want pattern recognition, not overload.
If you're on a micro-equipped tier (most new funded traders should be), use MNQ/MES. 1/10th the tick value, same setups, way less psychological pressure when a trade goes against you.
The three-phase plan
Phase 1 — Days 1-3: prove consistency
Goal: +2R net. Don't push. Trade 2-3 setups a day. You're proving to yourself you can follow the process.
Phase 2 — Days 4-8: compound
Goal: +8R net. Same rules, same size. Momentum builds when you're not forcing. If you hit a -1R day, size back down in phase 1.
Phase 3 — Days 9-12: finish
Goal: +16R target. Don't coast but don't gamble for the home run either. If you're close, half-size the last few trades to protect what you built.

In order: daily loss limit breaches (impatience), trailing drawdown brick walls (greed at the top), and revenge-trading after a Monday red day. All three have the same root cause — trying to hit the profit target in a single week instead of two.
Pass your challenge the boring way. It's the fastest way that works.
